The Real Story Behind SoCal Master Kush

One of the great things about having a genetics company that is respected by the community is that we get contacted by a lot of really cool people; other well-known breeders, award-winning growers, and people that just really love cannabis. Meeting other like-minded and passionate cannabis enthusiasts from around the world is just one of the perks of what we do.

A Letter From A Legend

About two years ago, we received a handwritten letter in the mail from the guy that found the well-known cut of Master Kush.

This is what the letter said:

”I found the seeds that made SoCal Master Kush in packs that came out of Arizona in 1997; Bubba lines. I popped the seeds in ‘98 and found 3 phenotypes.

  • *Green. It smelled loud with an earthy funk-chocolatey coffee with a little gas funk with thick colas.
  • Purple with green leaves. It smelled like grapes with a little sweet gas funk with popcorn buds.
  • 50/50 Green/Purple. It smelled like sweet funk with some earth to the back and had popcorn buds as well.

*808 Genetics works and breeds with the “Green” cut of Master Kush

I started selling the clone in ‘99 to the collectives under the name Green and Purple Kush. The names got changed that year to Master Kush and Hollywood PK. I sold the clones to a couple of seed companies from Amsterdam – white label – and Canada. With the money I made I opened SoCal Rx Clones in 2000. I made and sold F1 clones for 12 years. In 2011 I started making seeds for DNA Genetics. I got hit in 2012 and had to shut down. When I lost all of my genetics after getting hit, I went underground. In 2020, on my birthday, I found out I have a brain tumor in my frontal lobe. This July it has been 1 year since I found out about the tumor and I made the decision to become public about my work.

I hope this info helps you in future projects.

P.S. If you have a couple extra seeds of the crosses you did with Master, I would love to see the work you did to the lines.

Much Love,

Damien”

Thank You To Those Who Paved The Way

We’ve said it many times, but one of our goals is to both preserve and progress the plant. It’s important to us to keep seed stock that is almost identical to our favorite mothers, which we achieve by backcrossing the line. To progress the plant, we also outcross our favorite plants to strains that will improve each one and open up a gene pool with new traits and qualities, producing the potential to create the next popular strain. We love working with plants and we love what we do.

We are grateful for people like Damien that helped lay the groundwork for today’s strains and cannabis community. Without the passion and dedication to the plant from the OGs that braved prohibition, we may have lost a lot of important strains. So, thank you to anybody that has helped keep the plant around and provided a voice to improve public perception about this amazing plant.

P.S. Yes, we sent Damien seeds; every Master Kush cross we made.
